To support immigrants, refugees, and newcomers in starting safe and successful careers in Canada, ELAC offers self-paced safety courses recognized across Alberta. These programs provide essential knowledge of workplace standards, rights, and responsibilities, helping participants meet employer requirements and protect themselves and others on the job.

Each course combines clear instruction with practical modules, ensuring newcomers gain the confidence and skills needed to work in a variety of industries while maintaining the highest standards of health and safety.

Below are the courses currently available::

1.    WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System)
This self-paced online course provides a comprehensive introduction to Canada’s national standard for handling hazardous materials. Participants learn how to recognize hazards, interpret safety data, and follow proper labeling and precautionary procedures to maintain a safe work environment.

Modules

·      Introduction to WHMIS and legal requirements

·      Hazard classification and communication systems

·      Precautionary statements and safe handling practices

·      Supplier and workplace labels

·      Understanding and using Safety Data Sheets (SDS)

 

2.    CSTS (Construction Safety Training Systems)

Required for tradespeople working on industrial worksites in Alberta, this computer-based course delivers essential training on worksite safety. Learners gain the knowledge to identify hazards, follow safety regulations, and apply best practices in construction environments.

·      Fundamentals of construction site safety

·      Hazard recognition and risk control

·      Personal protective equipment (PPE)

·      Emergency preparedness and response

·      Worker rights and responsibilities

 

3.    Alberta Health & Safety Orientation (AH&SO)

This course introduces participants to Alberta’s Occupational Health and Safety Act, focusing on legal rights, responsibilities, and practical skills for creating a safe workplace. It equips newcomers with the awareness needed to prevent accidents and respond to emergencies.
